The Best Sunday Roasts of Sydney
Whether you're a traditionalist at heart or prefer fancy duck fat potatoes, we can all agree there is no better way to spend the last day of the week than enjoying a Sunday roast.
The humble Sunday get together originates back to 15th Century Britain, during the reign of King Henry VII. It became a ritual of his royal guards, who sat down and shared roast beef together every Sunday after church. Fast forward to the Industrial Age, most households would enjoy a roast after church. The occasion became synonymous with the religious and social values of the time.
Nowadays, the Sunday meal is more likely to demonstrate our love of a good beer and a chat with mates. Also OK. That’s why we’ve curated the top 5 venues in Sydney for your next roast. Don’t believe us? There’s proof in the Yorkshire pudding.
#1. Chiswick, Woollahra.
Matt Moran has designed the whole menu to feature only local or sustainable produce, including vegetables from the restaurant garden. Gather your family or friends and enjoy a whole roasted lamb on a spit whilst sitting amongst the lush greenery of Chiswick garden.
#2. Ester, Chippendale.
A Sunday roast like no other! For those less traditional roasters, this may be more your thing. The set menu is a little more along the lines of bone marrow on toast with smoked potatoes and chickpea miso, so don’t be upset if you’re expecting chicken and gravy. Nonetheless, you will not be disappointed.
#3. The Paddington, Paddington.
Fancy rotisserie chicken and incredible sides - Merivale have hit the nail on the head. The perfect place for large groups, so we suggest you book in advance as this place is a local favourite.
#4. The Lord Dudley, Woollahra.
One of the last British style pubs left in Sydney, The Lord Dudley has been a Paddington institution since 1895. Every Sunday you can head downstairs to the glasshouse courtyard and enjoy a very traditional roast, trimmings and all. The perfect place to take your Father.
Happy Roasting!
